Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Meghalaya

The Government of Meghalaya had set up a separate Directorate for Sports and youth Affairs  as per the Notification No:EDN-177/83/80 dated 18th March 1985, with headquarter at Shillong. The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs is responsible for the promotion of sports and youth welfare programmes in the state of Meghalaya. The department also monitors the functioning of the State Olympic Association, District Sports Offices, State Level Sports Associations, District and Sub-Divisional Sports Associations and clubs and schools undertaking sports and games activities in the State.

Shillong Lajong Football Club was established an I-League football club in the year 1983. The main objective of the club is to improve the standard of football in the state and to spot, train and nurture local talent of the state of Meghalaya.

Northeast United Football Club

Sports in MeghalayaNortheast United Football Club was founded on 15 August 2014. It is an Indian Super League football franchise in Guwahati, Assam. The club recently played in the inaugural season of the Indian Super League.  The Club is owned by Bollywood actor John Abraham and I-League club, Shillong Lajong.   NorthEast United FC represents the 8 states of India - Meghalaya, Assam, Sikkim,Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram.

Rangdajied United FC

Rangdajied United FC is an Indian football club from Meghalaya. This club was founded in the year 1987. The club was formerly known as Ar-Hima Football Club. Rangdajied United FC have qualified for I-League next season by winning the 2013 I-League 2nd Division Final Round that was held at Bangalore.

Sports Personalities of Meghalaya

Meghalaya also has produced some of the best sportsmen in the country. The names of Aiborlang Khongjee and Redeem Tlang both footballers shine in the sports arena of Meghalaya.

Khongjee was born 1983 in a small town in jaintia hills. He is an Indian football player currently playing for I League club Shillong Lajong as a defender. He also played inaugural edition of the Indian Super League for NorthEast United.

Redeem Tlang

Redeem Tlang was born 22 February 1995. This young IndianSports persons in Meghalaya professional footballer plays as a striker for Shillong Lajong in the I-League. He was also selected For the inaugural edition of the Indian Super League for NorthEast United.


Nehru Stadium in Meghalaya

Nehru Stadium is a football stadium in Shillong. It is used mainly  for football matches and hosts the home matches of Shillong Lajong FC of the I-League. Before professional football was played in Shillong, the stadium was created for football and track and field sports at an amateur level. In 2009, the football club known as Shillong Lajong F.C earned promotion to the top-tier of Indian football I-League and as a result started using the Nehru Stadium as there ground. The team regularly drew thirty thousand fans for the games which was surprising considering that the stadium can only hold twenty thousand seats. After relegation the stadium was again used for Lajong games in the I-League 2nd Division for the 2011 Season Final Round.
