Meghalaya 10 day tour Itinerary

Meghalaya is a beautiful hill station in northeast India and is also the home of three main ethnic tribes the Khasis, the Jaintias and the Garos. If you are planning to visit Meghalaya, and you are confused how to begin tour trip, however for your help I have created a 10 day Meghalaya tour itinerary, keeping Shillong as the base. The attractions included in the itinerary are the main tourist spots of Shillong and the nearby areas, Cherapunjee and Mawlynnong Village and Nartiang Village

Tour Itinerary


Day 1


Tour of Meghalaya


Arrive in Shillong and you can and settle in a hotel. There are many good hotels in Police bazaar area in Shillong. You can choose a hotel as per your Budget. Some of the hotels in Police bazaar are Hotel Centre Point, Hotel Broadway, Hotel Monsoon, Hotel rainbow etc. On this day, if you arrive by evening there is not much you could do or if you are here by noon then you can visit the local bazaars near your hotel.

Day 2

On day 2, after having our breakfast leave in the morning to Umiam Lake, a beautiful scenic lake that you will see as you enter Shillong from Guwahati. You can explore the lake (also referred as Barapani) by going for a ride on speed boat, waterbus or paddle boat. Nehru Park, a botanical garden, is located near the Umiam Lake water complex.

Water Complex area attracts a huge number of tourist. If you want to spend some time in a serene atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of the city life then, you could go to the Ri Kynjai resort. There you can relish yourself with some hot coffee in the restaurant of the resort. However these restaurants are quite expensive. The other option is the Orchid Lake Resort located near the water complex.

Head to Laitumkrah, after exploring the lake, to get some local experience in Shillong. The Laitumkrah streets are lined with restaurants and shops. There is also a local market, where the local people shop for daily products groceries, vegetables, meat, fruits. There are many restaurants and cage shops like Munchies, flavours, different flavours etc. where you could have food for reasonable rates.

Day 3

Travel to Upper Shillong on day 3, to view the tall pine woods, picturesque rolling hills and also visit the famous attractions. The first stop is the very popular Shillong Peak. From the peak you can  enjoy the panoramic view of the entire city.

The next tourist stop is Elephant Falls, which is a three steps falls. In order to see the falls, you will have to walk down the steps from the car parking area.Traditional Khasi dress is rented for taking pictures before you actually go to see waterfalls.

On the way back from Upper Shillong, if you still have the daylight, take the Happy Valley route  to stop by at Sweet Falls, a favorite falls of the locals.

Day 4

Tour of Meghalaya

If you are interested in seeing more local life, then make a visit to the Iewduh market also known as bara bazaar. This place is extremely crowded. Take a walk through the busy bara bazaar area. It is one of the oldest and the biggest market in northeast.

Take a walk through Iewduh (Bara Bazar)-Iewduh means Big Market - It is one of the biggest market in North-East India. There are separate areas dedicated to vegetables, fruits, iron works, fish, beef, betel and so on.

Now you can hire a cab from Bara bazaar to Police bazaar. This place is always packed with people shopping. Here you can find some of the finest restaurants and hotels in Shillong. Visit Glory's Plaza which is run by the Tibetans for some beautiful foreign clothes, accessories and shoes.

Day 5

Cherrapunjee (Sohra), the mesmerizing place with breath-taking landscape, cascading waterfalls, limestone caves, sheer cliffs is one of the most visited places in Meghalaya. Cherrapunjee is a place to discover the Indian summer monsoons. A day trip to Cherapunjee is a must.

Among the tourist spots in Cherapunjee includes Noh Kalikai Falls, Mawmluh Cave- one of the longest caves in India, Thangkharang Park, Mawkdok Dympep Valley View,Sa-I-Mika Park,Dain-Thlen Falls,Mawmluh Cave and Eco Park.


Day 6


Tour of Meghalaya


The next destination is the Mawphlang Sacred Forest. It is one of the renowned sacred forests in Khasi hills. It is located about 25kms from Shillong. This sacred grove has been preserved by the locals since time immemorial. The grove is surrounded by grassland on all sides.  A walk through the forest is a magical encounter with nature. You can also pack your food and can enjoy your lunch amidst nature

Day 7

A day trip to Mawlynnong Village is one the most common day trips from Shillong. Mawlynnong has earned the title of being the cleanest village in Asia. You could stroll around the footpaths in the village to see some attractive houses and cottages. Bangladesh can be seen from the view point built from on top of a tree made with a bamboo. There are few local eating places in the village where you could have your lunch, drink tea and have snacks.

On your way back, from the village, stop on the roadside and trek to the Rewai village (about 30 minutes) to view the Living Root Bridge. A bridge is created across a stream out of the roots of the Banyan tree.


Day 8

Tour of Meghalaya

Narthiang is about 65 km from Shillong and it is a famous attraction of Jaintia Hills.  The first tourist spot is the ruins of the summer palace of the king of Jaintiapur. There is a Durga temple, close to the ruins of the summer palace. The main attraction of this place is the monoliths. Return back to Shillong.

Day 9

You can spend your last day in Shillong visiting the Golf Link, Wards Lake and the famous Cathedral. The cathedral is located near Don Bosco Square and Dhan kheti. From the very moment you step inside the catherdral Gates, you feel an aura of the Lord enveloping you. It is a must visit location for everyone.

Head towards Wards Lake, after the Cathedral visit by a cab. Walk along the path, take a boat ride of the lake or relax on the benches. After the ward’s lake, then hire a taxi to Golf Link, the only golf course in Shillong. You must definitely visit this golf link. After this you can go back to your hotel.

Day 10

Early morning, head towards the airport.
