Transportation in Meghalaya

Meghalaya is a landlocked state with road transport being the only means of transportation. Meghalaya is well connected by roads and by air with the other cities in India. Though the capital Shillong is well connected, other parts of the state don’t have proper road transportation facilities.

Meghalaya by Road

Road is the means transport in the city. The state has a number of timber bridges. Meghalaya has roads of around 7,633 km. 3,691 km of road is black topped. The national highway connects the city with Assam, Mizoram and Agartala. Day and night bus services also available in the town which is connected with the major towns of the North East regions. Private bus and taxi services are also available in the state.

The national Highways in Meghalaya connect all important cities of India and other significant tourist Places. Following are the national highways that run through the state of Meghalaya.


Transportation in Meghalaya

National Highway 40


This National Highway runs entirely within the state of Meghalaya. The highway connects Jorabat and Jowai in Meghalaya. The total distance of the highway is of 216 km.

National Highway 44

The National Highway connects Shillong, with Sabroom, near India-Bangladesh in Tripura. The highway runs for a distance of 630 km of which 184 km is in Meghalaya, 111 km is in Assam and 335 km is in Tripura. This Highway is also the only National Highway that connects Tripura with the all the states of Northeast.

National Highway 51

This National Highway is shared both by Assam and Meghalaya. NH-51 starts from Paikan in Assam  and ends at Dalu, in Meghalaya.

National Highway 62
National Highway 62 from Damra in Assam and ends at Dalu, in Meghalaya. The total length of the highway is 195 km of which 5 km is in Assam and 190 is in Meghalaya.

Meghalaya Transport Department (MTC) is an Indian transport organization which provides bus services within Meghalaya and adjoining states. Meghalaya Transport Corporation which was formed under the Road Transport Act, 1950.

Local transportation in Meghalaya

Unmetred Yellow Taxis and Buses are available for travelling to various destinations within the city. Tourist Taxis are also available in Meghalaya for local as well as for long distance tours.

Bus service


City buses are good options, to travel within the city. Mainly two kinds of buses pass from Meghalaya City bus and Bazar bus. City buses are mainly used by the tourist and the Bazaar buses are for villagers coming to Meghalaya.

Taxi service

Black and yellow unmetered shared taxis are available in Meghalaya. These taxis are faster and are always shared. The rates may vary from Rs 5 to Rs 15.  For sightseeing the best option is to hire a taxi for full day. The fares should be fixed beforehand.

Transportation in Meghalaya


The only airport is located is in Umroi, about 40 kms from Shillong on the Guwahati-Shillong highway. However, the small size of the airport does not allow operation of large aircraft. Due to its size, only the small aircraft operate from Kolkata and Agartala. A new flight service has started in the state. The Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati is the nearest international airport of Meghalaya. The airport connects the state with several major cities in India. Meghalaya has also helicopter service, which connects Shillong to Guwahati and Tura.

The Umroi Airport

It is located about 35 km from Shillong is a small airport. Currently, Air India operates aircraft on this route. Taxis and Buses service are available from Shillong to Umroi and back. There is also a flight available:

Helicopter service in Meghalaya

Helicopter service is available from Guwahati to Shillong and Tura. It takes 20 minutes from Guwahati to reach Shillong and 1 hour to reach Tura from Guwahati. This means of transportation is very convenient and economical.

Meghalaya By Rail

Meghalaya does not have a rail head. The Guwahati Railway Station is the native railway station of the state. The Government has planned to extend the rail link from Guwahati to Byrnihat within Meghalaya.
